NC's Don Davis giving money to charity that Swalwell donated to his campaigns

Rep. Don Davis announced Monday that he plans to donate to charity any money that Eric Swalwell, a fellow U.S. House Democrat, donated to his campaign, his staff told McClatchy.

Davis’ decision comes amid allegations of sexual misconduct against Swalwell that ended the California lawmaker’s gubernatorial race and caused him to resign from Congress effective Tuesday. Swalwell denied the allegations against him.

Since first being elected to Congress in 2022, Davis, a Democrat from Snow Hill, collected around $2,000 from Swalwell.

CNN and The San Francisco Chronicle broke the news about the allegations by multiple women against Swalwell over the weekend. A former staffer told CNN that he raped her and left her bruised and bleeding.

The news caused a flurry of backlash, with Sens. Ruben Gallego and Adam Schiff and Rep. Jimmy Gomez opting to withdraw their support for Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, CNN reported. More than 50 former members of his staff called for his resignation.

“To my family, staff, friends, and supporters,” Swalwell posted on social media, “I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

Multiple district attorneys offices are reportedly investigating the allegations, as is the House Committee on Ethics.

As for Davis, he is up for reelection for a third-term and facing off against Laurie Buckhout, a Republican from Edenton. Republicans redrew Davis’ district this year to give their party a better chance at running against Davis.

As of Feb. 11, Davis has around $2 million cash on hand.
