'Baltimore Strong': Nancy Pelosi praised in Maryland as she nears retirement

BALTIMORE — Nancy Pelosi, 86, the Baltimore-raised congresswoman who, in 2007, became the first female speaker of the U.S. House, is to be honored by the Maryland House of Delegates on Monday night.
Maryland House will have a resolution for the Speaker Emerita. Then, Pelosi will address the delegates during their regular session in Annapolis, according to the office of state House Speaker Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk.
The resolution follows a Monday breakfast hosted by Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland Democrats, also honoring Pelosi and her accomplishments. “While I know that your heart and representation might belong to San Francisco, she is Maryland tough and Baltimore strong,” Moore said during the Monday morning event, referring to her as ‘a daughter of Baltimore’.
Pelosi served two stints as speaker, totaling about eight years, and announced last year that she would not seek reelection after leaving her U.S. House leadership post in 2022. She is the daughter of the late Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., who was a congressman from 1939 to 1947 before becoming Baltimore’s mayor.
Her late brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, was also a Baltimore mayor. The family lived in Baltimore’s Little Italy.
Pelosi will retire from the House in January 2027, although she stepped down as speaker in January 2023.
