WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump held a rare meeting with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer Thursday at the White House where the two men aired differences on health care and funding for a key New York infrastructure project that the president has halted.

Trump requested the meeting to discuss his decision to hold up funding for the Gateway tunnel project between New York and New Jersey, according to a statement from Schumer’s office.

Schumer, who represents New York in the Senate, pushed to “promptly release” the Gateway money, according to the statement.

The Democratic leader also pressed Trump to drop his opposition to renewing expired Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Open enrollment for Obamacare policies is set to close Thursday with Congress still at loggerheads over whether to extend the subsidies. As a result, Obamacare insurance premiums have more than doubled on average.

The House passed a three-year extension of the subsidies after some Republicans joined with Democrats in support of the legislation but Senate Republicans haven’t taken up the measure. Talks to reach a deal on a compromise have bogged down.

Trump on Thursday released his own health care plan, which doesn’t include a renewal of the subsidies.

Schumer also urged Trump to pull back on ICE raids that the Democrat said “are terrorizing communities,” according to the statement.
